Located in the Province Alps Cote d Azur region, it is the capital of the Var department, in the former province of Province. The population was 1,400 at the 2000 census.
Cathedral St Marie was built in a Romanesque style in the 11th and 12th centuries and was expanded in the 17th century. Its gothic and the belfry and facade are from the 18th century. This is a sight well worth checking out.

Its old picturesque city of ancient fountains and a colourful daily market with the smells and sounds typical of Province.
Home to the French Navy and has quite an impressive maritime history. Captured by the English and Spanish troops in 1793 it was Napoleon Bonaparte who first made a name for himself here by recapturing the town and restoring French rule. Toulon was also a target for Nazi troops in 1942 that surrounded the harbour forcing the French to sink their own ships rather than see them captured by the enemy. As a result of wartime bombing Toulon is not the most picturesque of ports. However, it does have a lively, gritty feel to it and is much loved by Provencal locals.
There is also an interesting cultural scene in Toulon, useful museums and a popular opera house. It is home to the largest High School of France and one of the largest opera houses after Paris.
The region is famous for being the host of the finals of the annual Toulon Tournament a football tournament of under 20 national players from around the whole world. The citys top football club is Sporting Toulon Var, currently playing in the third level of French Football. Famous players such as David Ginola, Delio Onis, Jean Tigana, Christian Dalger or more recently Sebastien Squillacci formerly played for Sporting.

United States Reports Record High Number of Stds

Monday, April 5th, 2010

It ’s always good to beat the record previously held unless, as in this case, the record includes the number of cases of sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. In 2006, the United States reached an all-to the high number of cases of chlamydia reported – over a million. To put this in perspective, which is approximately 348 per 100,000 people. This may not seem like much, but this is a 5. 6% increase over the previous year. Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease that usually goes unnoticed but that can lead to reproductive problems if untreated. Last year alone, 1,031,000 cases of chlamydia, which were reported broken the record for number of cases of sexually transmitted disease. The previous record was attributed to 1978 (of gonorrhea cases) were almost 18,000 cases from 2006. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, could have a positive spin on this new album: much better screening methods to capture cases of chlamydia, which has never been reported previously. Regarding risk factors for chlamydia, reports suggest that black women are 7 times more likely of being infected with sexually transmitted disease white women and 2 times more likely than Hispanic women infected. Nevertheless, chlamydia will attack without regard to race, so sexually active women should always practice safe sex.
Gonorrhea is another sexually transmitted disease that appears to be a comeback after being in a historically low level. Gonorrhea, like chlamydia is often less symptoms and can cause pelvic inflammatory disease in women or epididymitis in men if left untreated. These new cases of gonorrhea, however, see a bit “of a twist. They seem to be a new strain of superbug that has developed resistance to antibiotics usually used to treat it. Both the 2005 and 2006 saw the number of gonorrhea cases increased, with a reference city for nearly 15 percent of these varieties under the superbug. “Researchers are not entirely convinced that this new effort,” the superbug Gonorrhea is the cause of the steady increase in cases, but can not find another cause close to final. What worries doctors is that more research and this new effort “superbug travels from California and Hawaii in the United States in the Midwest and in all regions of the south, and appears to be declining.
Meanwhile, cases of syphilis increased for the first time in the last decade and a half. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that, untreated, can damage several internal organs and cause dementia, blindness, paralysis or even death. Although syphilis is uncommon, there was an increase of 14% of cases between 2005 and 2006.
With these three sexually transmitted diseases on an upward trend, it is more important than ever to stress the advantages of safe sex. If we become vocal advocates of safe sex and condom use on a public platform in our communities through volunteering at a nonprofit organization or in our homes, in our circle of family and friends, is a problem to be addressed.
