    I live in New York.
Many people in the upper United states area do not like the southern people.
This is mainly because of their accents and how they are not that accepting of others [Homophobia is everywhere in the south!]

I see them as morally strong, very polite people who LOVE sweet tea and grits!

Much the same due to outdated movies and tv shows. The reality
is that the south is more modern, wealthy and progressive than many other parts of the USA.

Racist… hmm… it used to be, and many of the “rednecks” still probably are… but there has been a lot more racial diversity lately… especially with hispanics…

    Overly religious? It absolutely is…

but Backwards??? where the hell did you draw that conclusion from? there’s nothing backwards there at all, and definitely not compared to the rest of the western world.

Im from California. And alot of us think its very racist and homophobic. Of course not all the people there are like that but Im not sure if I would ever want to visit out of fear.

Basically it’s viewed as racist, overly religious and overall just backwards.
Although most of the world’s modern music originated in the American South

My dad was born in Texas, My mom was born in Alabama and I was born in Florida. So I think I can answer this question.

I am only slightly racist but only against Muslims because they threatened to kill Matt Stone and Trey Parker (Creators of South Park for the people living under a rock for 15 years)

I am an athiest and so is my best friend, and I only know like 5 other people who are overly religious and one of them is my grandma and she’s a Quaker. The rest that I know of is like just regular Babtists and like 2 Jews.

And the backwards compared accusation is a little rude in my opinion. I think of the rednecks with the fact that they go to school wearing camoflauge jackets and bragging on Myspace about how great the “Muddin’ ” was the other day just means that they’re very down to earth.

However you should really be thinking what’s going on in your part of America (God Bless It). No one really knows what’s going on in the state of Montana. Think about it. Whenever I see a shot of Montana on TV, it’s always some wide open plain or dense woods.
